Jerzy Paweł Nowacki

Jerzy Paweł Nowacki (born November 24, 1947, in Gdańsk) – Polish mathematician, holder of a habilitation degree in technical sciences; rector of the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology since 1994

In 1965, he graduated from the Klement Gottwald High School in Warsaw, and in 1970, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at the University of Warsaw. In 1976, based on his dissertation titled “Dislocations and Dyslocations in Cosserat Media,” devoted to the theory of linear defects in an elastic continuum with oriented particles, he earned his Ph.D. in technical sciences at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2012, at the same institute, he was awarded a postdoctoral degree in technical sciences based on the monograph *Static and Dynamic Coupled Fields in Bodies with Piezoeffects or Polarization Gradient*, which is devoted to electro-elastic fields induced by dislocations and other sources in layered anisotropic piezoelectrics with a layered structure. In addition to my main area of scientific interest, which is the mechanics of continuous media, I also focus on issues related to lifelong learning and online education; specifically, a model for the university of the future, around which a community will form—comprising students, faculty, alumni, and their employers—that continuously updates its knowledge by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the Internet.

From 1973 to 1993, he was a research fellow at the Institute of Information Technology (IPPT) of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1993, he founded the Polish-Japanese University of Computer Technology in Warsaw (now the Polish-Japanese Academy of Computer Technology) and subsequently became the university’s rector.

He is a member of, among others, the International Society for the Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics, the Polish Society for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the Polish Scientific Society for Internet Education, and the Polish Society for the Applications of Electromagnetism, of which he served as president from 1992 to 1997.

From 2016 to 2020, he served as chair of the Conference of Rectors of Non-Public Academic Institutions and as a member of the Presidium of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Academic Institutions.

He has been awarded, among other honors, the Knight's Cross (2001) and the Commander's Cross (2011) of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Ribbon (2008), and the Medal of the National Education Commission (2002).
